BETWEEN SESSIONS

A QUARTERLY NOTE FROM JOSH

Hello everyone,

I wanted to send a quick update with a few reminders, some resources I've found helpful, and most importantly, to say thank you.

I really appreciate your flexibility and patience during my recent office moves. It was a great opportunity for me, and I'm so glad to have my own space I can offer to you. I love my work and am grateful to be on your journey with you.

GROUP THERAPY

There's something about group therapy that just can't be replicated in an individual session.

This fall, I'm thinking of running a group for men who are newer to marriage...say, under 5 years or so into the commitment. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, shoot me a message. I'm currently gauging interest right now -- no commitment whatsoever.

I think it could be a really good opportunity for dudes to build some foundational communication and conflict skills, and also develop a stronger sense of self through the process. If that or something else interests you, I'm all ears.

RESOURCE WORTH REVISITING

Yes, it's this one again.

Here's a one-pager — perfect for printing and sticking on the refrigerator as a reminder when emotions start taking over.

QUICK REMINDERS

Our therapy sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes. I often get caught up in great conversation with you, but if we're wrapping up with about ten minutes left in the hour, please don't worry that you're being rushed. You're still getting the full session we've planned for.

I use the last part of that hour for documentation and preparing for the upcoming session. And if we go over, we go over. NBD.

Also don't forget that we have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Don't get stuck with a late cancellation fee!

ENJOYING OR THINKING
ABOUT LATELY

📖READING - THE ILIAD

In honor of Christopher Nolan's version of The Odyssey, I'm currently reading Homer's other epic poem - The Iliad. It's pretty cool…sometimes. But it's more useful for me if I wake up at 2:00 a.m. and can't fall back asleep. I just read a few pages and I'm snoozing in under ten minutes. Homer has become part of my sleep hygiene routine.

🎙️LISTENING - CONAN O'BRIEN NEEDS A FRIEND

I've especially enjoyed the episodes where Conan's old SNL friends come on. There's something joyful about listening to people who've known each other for decades make each other laugh. And truly, laughing is actually a great way to physically release stress from the body.

🎥WORTH WATCHING -

HOW DOPAMINE AFFECTS LEARNING AND MOTIVATION IN ADHD BRAINS

If ADHD is part of your life—or someone you love has it—I recently came across a YouTube video by Jessica McCabe on the role of dopamine in ADHD brains. The first half does a great job explaining it, and her channel is full of videos I have not watched, but that may be interesting to you. Even if ADHD isn't something you personally struggle with, it may help you better understand someone who does.

💭I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT - FORGIVENESS

I've found it surprisingly hard to describe what it is. But I think my working definition is something akin to: Forgiveness means I don't keep punishing someone for the offense. And it's not ammunition the next conflict. That doesn't mean trust is instantly restored, or a free pass is being given. But it does mean I'm not letting the injury become a permanent weapon in the relationship. I'm also freeing myself from unresolved bitterness and resentment having power over me. I don't know if that's helpful or not, but it's a window into how I'm framing it for myself. I hope it stirs self-reflection for you.
